Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has stepped onto one of European football’s biggest stages after UEFA appointed him to oversee the 2026 Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg.
The appointment is a landmark for African officiating. Artan was rated among the continent’s leading referees, but he was unable to work at the 2026 World Cup in the United States after being barred days before the tournament over vetting concerns. U.S. officials alleged security links without publicly providing proof, according to the Associated Press.
