Bundesliga 2026/27 Preview: Can Anyone Slow Bayern Munich?

The Bundesliga returns on Friday, 28 August, and the first fixture immediately puts the champions under the spotlight. Bayern Munich host VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena in a repeat of two decisive meetings from last season.

Those numbers make Bayern the obvious benchmark. The more useful betting question, however, is whether the available price properly reflects their dominance in a new season shaped by a late summer and uneven preparation.

Bayern begin as the team to beat

Bayern finished 16 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund last season. They also have a remarkable opening-day record: they have not lost on Matchday 1 since 2011. That history will make them a popular selection against Stuttgart.

The matchup still deserves analysis. Stuttgart were the Bundesliga's second-highest scorers in 2025/26, while Deniz Undav finished behind only Kane in the scoring chart. A team capable of attacking Bayern may create opportunities even if the champions remain the likelier winners.

Instead of treating the home win as the only option, compare it with Bayern's team-goals line, both teams to score and the winning-margin markets. Stuttgart's starting attack and Bayern's defensive availability should determine which angle, if any, offers value.

Dortmund lead the chasing group

Dortmund's second-place finish established them as Bayern's nearest challenger, although the final gap showed the scale of the task. Their campaign begins at home to Hamburg in one of Matchday 1's headline fixtures.

RB Leipzig, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen filled the next four positions last season. Each has a case for European qualification, but early outright markets can overreact to club reputation. The first month should tell us which contenders have retained tactical continuity and which are still integrating new players.

Look beyond points alone. Expected goals, shots conceded inside the box and the ability to protect a lead provide better clues about whether a fast start is sustainable.

Promoted clubs bring new uncertainty

Three newcomers feature in intriguing opening fixtures. Elversberg host Bayer Leverkusen, Paderborn travel to Mainz and Schalke begin away at Augsburg. Their arrival adds uncertainty to match prices because recent second-tier results do not always translate cleanly to the Bundesliga.

Home advantage may give Elversberg a platform, while Schalke's name and support can attract money even when the underlying matchup is difficult. Bettors should be careful not to price the badge instead of the current team.

For promoted sides, useful early indicators include how often they enter the opposition penalty area, whether they can defend set pieces and how their intensity holds up after the 60th minute. Live markets may become more attractive once those patterns are visible.

The cup offers a valuable form check

Most Bundesliga clubs play in the first round of the DFB Cup from 21 to 24 August, one week before the league begins. Those matches provide competitive evidence after a pre-season complicated by the World Cup.

Cup results still require context. A comfortable win over lower-league opposition does not guarantee Bundesliga success, but the lineup can reveal which internationals are ready, who is first choice and whether a new tactical system is functioning. Minutes played may be more informative than the score.
