Aston Villa host Arsenal at Villa Park tonight in the final fixture of Premier League Matchweek 2. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00pm BST (10:00pm EAT) on Monday, 31 August 2026.

The teams arrive in Birmingham following sharply contrasting opening-weekend performances. Villa suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Brighton, while defending champions Arsenal began their campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City.

Aston Villa looking for a response

Unai Emery will demand a much stronger performance after Villa were comfortably beaten on the opening weekend. They struggled to contain Brighton’s movement and offered little threat in the final third.

Villa have also undergone considerable squad changes, meaning Emery is still trying to find the right balance. Nicolas Jackson could make his home debut and provide the pace and presence Villa lacked against Brighton. Leon Goretzka may also be available following his arrival from Bayern Munich.

Despite their poor start, the hosts should not be dismissed at Villa Park. Villa defeated Arsenal 2-1 in this fixture last season and have won four of their seven Premier League home meetings with the Gunners since returning to the top flight in 2019.

The home crowd and Emery’s tactical familiarity with Arsenal could therefore make the contest more competitive than the opening-weekend results suggest.

Arsenal begin their title defence strongly

Mikel Arteta’s side looked composed and clinical in their 3-0 win over Coventry. Arsenal controlled possession, limited their opponents’ opportunities and received goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz.

They have now recorded clean sheets in both competitive matches this season, having also beaten Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield.

Arsenal should dominate the ball again at Villa Park. Saka’s ability to isolate defenders on the right and the movement of Odegaard and Havertz between the lines could expose a Villa defence that appeared vulnerable against Brighton.

Christos Tzolis also impressed on his Premier League debut, giving Arteta another direct attacking option on the opposite flank.

Team news

Villa will be without the suspended Joao Gomes following his red card against Brighton. Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo are also unavailable, while Goretzka could be handed his debut.

For Arsenal, former Villa defender Ezri Konsa is available to face his old club. Bruno Guimaraes will undergo a late fitness check after missing the Coventry victory. William Saliba remains a long-term absentee, while Jurrien Timber is still recovering from a groin problem.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal betting tips

Main prediction: Arsenal to win

The visitors appear more settled and arrive with considerably greater confidence. Villa’s home record in this fixture deserves respect, but Arsenal’s attacking quality and defensive organisation should ultimately prove decisive.

Value selection: Arsenal to win and under 3.5 goals

Villa are likely to adopt a more cautious approach after conceding four goals at Brighton. Arsenal may control the match without turning it into a high-scoring contest, making an away win combined with under 3.5 total goals an attractive option.

Alternative market: Both teams to score — No

Arsenal have kept two consecutive competitive clean sheets, while Villa failed to score in their opening league match. The visitors have a strong chance of recording another shutout if they control possession and prevent Villa from counter-attacking.

Correct-score prediction: Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal

Villa should show more discipline in front of their supporters, but Arsenal possess the stronger and more settled team. The Gunners are backed to remain patient, create the better chances and secure their second Premier League victory of the season.
